Key takeaways
- Hand pipes are the smallest and simplest; bongs are the smoothest; bubblers sit in between.
- More water and more chambers mean smoother hits, but more cleaning.
- Think about where you’ll use it most: pocket, coffee table or somewhere in between.
Walk up to a glass wall and you’ll see three main shapes: hand pipes, bubblers and bongs. Each one trades portability for smoothness in a different way. Here’s how to pick the one that fits how you actually use it. All glass at X Rated is sold for legal tobacco use.
The three side by side
| Piece | Water | Size | Smoothness | Cleaning | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand pipe | None | Pocket size | Least smooth | Easiest | On the go, quick sessions |
| Bubbler | Small chamber | Hand size | Smoother | Moderate | Something in between |
| Bong (water pipe) | Large chamber | Tabletop | Smoothest | Most work | Sitting down at home |
Hand pipes
A hand pipe (often called a spoon) is a bowl, a stem and a mouthpiece with no water. It fits in a pocket, costs the least and cleans fast. The trade-off is heat: smoke reaches you hotter and harsher than through water.
Bubblers
A bubbler is a hand pipe with a small water chamber built in. The water cools the smoke, so it’s smoother than a dry pipe while still fitting in one hand. Because the water chamber is sealed in, it takes more effort to clean, and it can spill if you tip it.
Bongs
A bong, or water pipe, has the largest water chamber and often a percolator for extra cooling. It’s the smoothest of the three but the least portable, and it needs regular cleaning. Our first glass guide covers beakers, straight tubes, wall thickness and joint sizes.
How to choose
- Mostly on the go? A hand pipe, or a small bubbler if you want it smoother.
- Mostly at home? A 10–14 inch beaker bong with a 14 mm joint is an easy first piece.
- Hate cleaning? Start with a hand pipe, or a bong with a removable downstem.
- Clumsy? Thicker glass (5–7 mm) and a wide base survive more bumps.
Keep it clean
Whatever you choose, isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt bring glass back to clear. See how to clean a bong and the cleaning supplies we stock.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bubbler and a bong?
A bubbler is a handheld pipe with a small built-in water chamber; a bong is a larger tabletop water pipe that cools smoke more.
Which is smoothest?
A bong, especially one with a percolator, followed by a bubbler, then a dry hand pipe.
Which is easiest to clean?
A hand pipe. Bubblers take the most effort because the water chamber is sealed in.
