How-to

The three-pinch pack

The classic way to pack a pipe so it draws well and stays lit.

Step 01

Pinch one

Drop tobacco in loosely to the rim and press gently to about a third full.

Step 02

Pinch two

Add more, press a little firmer, to about two-thirds full.

Step 03

Pinch three

Top it off and press firmly to just below the rim. Test the draw.

Step 04

Light & tamp

Char the top, tamp it flat, then relight and sip slowly.

California law allows flavored loose-leaf pipe tobacco; flavored roll-your-own tobacco isn’t sold.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What’s a good first pipe?

A corn cob or an entry-level briar in a classic billiard shape. Both are forgiving and easy to clean.

Do you inhale pipe smoke?

No. Pipe smoke is sipped and held in the mouth for flavor, like a cigar.

How often should I clean my pipe?

Run a pipe cleaner through after every bowl and let it rest a day before smoking it again.

What’s an aromatic blend?

A blend with added toppings for room note and sweetness, usually built on Cavendish.

Why does my pipe keep going out?

Packed too tight or too loose, or puffing too slowly. That’s normal; tamp and relight.
