Percolators Explained:
Tree, Showerhead, Honeycomb and More

What a perc does, how the common types compare, and whether you need one for your first water piece.

Key takeaways

  • Percolators split smoke into many small bubbles, which cools it down.
  • More diffusion means a smoother pull but more drag and more cleaning.
  • A simple beaker or straight tube is still the best first piece.

A percolator, or perc, is a chamber inside a water pipe that forces smoke through water in many small bubbles instead of one big one. More surface area means cooler smoke.

Diffusion vs. drag

Every perc adds a little resistance when you pull. One or two percs feel smooth; stacking many can make a piece feel heavy to clear. If you like a fast, open pull, choose fewer percs.

Splashback

Overfilling a perc piece sends water toward your mouth. Fill just until the slits are covered, and add a splash guard or ash catcher if it’s a problem.

Do you need one?

Not for your first piece. A beaker with a diffused downstem is simple, smooth and easy to clean. Percs are a great upgrade once you know what you like.

All glass is sold for tobacco use only.

Filling water the right way

Add water until the slits of the downstem or perc are covered by about half an inch. Pull gently with the bowl empty to test: you want steady bubbling without water reaching the top chamber. Adjust a little at a time.

Percs and ash catchers

An ash catcher adds a percolator before the smoke reaches the main piece. It also catches debris, which keeps the main percs cleaner for longer. Match the ash catcher’s joint size and angle (45° or 90°) to your piece.

Terms you’ll hear

TermMeaning
DiffusionBreaking smoke into smaller bubbles
DragHow hard it is to pull through the piece
SplashbackWater reaching your mouth
Splash guardA dome or catcher that stops splashback
InlineA sideways perc at the base of the neck

When to upgrade

If your simple piece feels harsh even with fresh water and clean glass, a percolator or an ash catcher is the next step. If it already feels smooth and you like a fast pull, you may not need one at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do percolators make hits smoother?

Yes. They cool smoke by spreading it through more water, which most people find smoother.

Why does my perc piece splash?

Too much water. Fill just until the slits are covered.

Are percs hard to clean?

Harder than a plain tube. An alcohol-and-salt shake with every opening plugged handles most of it.
