Dab Rig 101:
Bangers, Carb Caps and Terp Pearls Explained

The parts of a dab rig, how quartz thickness affects heat, and the gear that makes the biggest difference.

Key takeaways

  • A rig is smaller than a bong to keep the path short for flavor.
  • Thicker quartz needs more torch time and more cool-down time.
  • A carb cap and a temperature reader make sessions far more consistent.

Dab rigs look like small water pipes, but the parts and the routine are different. Here’s what each piece does.

The parts

  • Rig: a small water piece with a short path for flavor.
  • Banger: a quartz bucket that attaches at the joint and gets heated.
  • Carb cap: sits on the banger to control airflow and hold heat.
  • Terp pearls: small balls that spin in the banger and spread heat.
  • Dab tool: a metal pick or scoop for loading.
  • Torch: a butane torch, unless you use an e-rig.

Quartz thickness and heat

Bottom thicknessTorch timeCool-down
2 mm15–20 s30–45 s
3 mm25–35 s45–60 s
4 mm35–45 s60–75 s
5 mm+45–60 s75–90 s

These are typical times with a standard butane torch. A thermometer or infrared temperature reader takes out the guesswork.

Joint size and angle

Bangers come in 10, 14 and 18 mm, male or female, at 45° or 90°. Match the size and gender to your rig’s joint, and the angle to its neck, so the banger sits level.

Torch or e-rig?

A torch setup is cheaper and fully adjustable. An e-rig holds a set temperature at the press of a button and is easier to repeat, but costs more and needs charging.

Keep quartz clean

Swab the banger with an isopropyl-dipped cotton swab while it’s warm, not hot. Built-up residue changes taste and heat retention.

Sold for legal use only.

A typical torch session

  1. Heat the banger evenly until the bottom glows faintly.
  2. Wait for it to cool to your target temperature (see the table above).
  3. Load with your dab tool, then place the carb cap.
  4. Draw slowly while spinning the cap to move heat around.
  5. Swab the banger with a cotton swab while it’s still warm.

Common mistakes

  • Too hot. Harsh taste and wasted material. Wait longer after heating.
  • Skipping the swab. Residue darkens quartz and changes heat retention.
  • Wrong joint. A loose fit leaks air; a forced fit can crack the joint.
  • Torching the cap. Heat the banger, never the carb cap.

Safety basics

Use a stable surface, keep the torch pointed away from you, let quartz cool before touching it, and keep butane away from heat. A silicone mat protects the table and keeps the rig from sliding.

Quartz styles

Flat-top bangers are the standard. Bevel-top designs hold carb caps closer. Thermal and core-reactor bangers use extra walls or inserts to hold heat longer. Start with a quality flat-top in 3–4 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What size banger fits my rig?

Check the joint: 10, 14 or 18 mm, and male or female. Bring the rig in and we’ll match it.

Why use a carb cap?

It restricts airflow so the banger holds heat at a lower temperature, which improves flavor.

What are terp pearls for?

They spin when you draw and spread heat around the banger floor.
