Conduction vs. Convection:
How to Pick a Dry Herb Vaporizer

How each heating style feels, what temperatures do, and the questions to ask before you buy.

Key takeaways

  • Conduction heats by contact and warms up fast; convection heats with hot air for even vapor.
  • Most vaporizers run between about 350°F and 430°F.
  • Ask about battery life, chamber cleaning and replacement parts before you buy.

Vaporizers heat material instead of burning it. The biggest choice you’ll make is how a device heats, and it shapes everything else about how it feels to use.

Two ways to heat

Conduction heats the chamber walls, and the material heats by touching them. It warms up fast and makes vapor continuously, but you’ll want to stir the chamber halfway through for an even session.

Convection pulls hot air through the material. Vapor comes on demand when you draw, heating is more even, and flavor tends to be cleaner. Convection devices usually cost more.

Temperature

Most vaporizers run between about 350°F and 430°F. Start low for flavor and step up a few degrees at a time for denser vapor. Many people start around 370°F and finish a session higher.

Portable or desktop

Portables run on batteries and fit in a pocket or bag; expect 45–90 minutes of use per charge. Desktop units plug in, hold temperature perfectly and are built for sharing with balloons or whips. Butane-heated devices need no battery at all; you heat them with a torch until they click.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • How long does it take to heat up?
  • Can I replace the battery, or is it built in?
  • How easy is the chamber to clean?
  • Does it work with a water pipe adapter?
  • What parts wear out, and do you stock them?

Bring those questions to the counter and we’ll show you a couple of options side by side. Vaporizers are sold for legal use with legal products only.

Grind and packing

A medium-fine, even grind heats most evenly. Convection devices like a looser pack so air can flow; conduction devices often work better packed a little firmer so material touches the chamber walls.

Maintenance

  • Brush out the chamber after every session.
  • Clean the mouthpiece and screens with isopropyl weekly.
  • Replace screens and seals when they clog or tear.

Common mistakes

Starting too hot, packing too tightly, and skipping cleaning are the big three. Each one makes vapor harsher and less flavorful.

Frequently asked questions

Is convection better than conduction?

Convection is usually more even and flavorful; conduction is faster and cheaper.

What temperature should I start at?

Many people start around 370°F and step up a few degrees at a time.

Do vaporizers need a grinder?

Yes. An even, medium grind heats most evenly.
