Key takeaways
- Most torch problems come from trapped air, cold fuel or a dirty jet, not a broken lighter.
- Purge the tank, refill with 5x or better refined butane, and wait about five minutes before lighting.
- No spark at all, even in the dark, usually means the igniter is worn and the torch needs replacing.
A torch lighter that won’t light is almost always fixable in a few minutes. Match your symptom below, try the fix, and only replace the torch if the igniter itself has given out. Always work away from flames and heat, with the torch pointed away from you.
Symptoms at a glance
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks, no flame, no hiss | Out of fuel | Fix 1 |
| Hisses but won’t catch | Air in the tank, or adjuster set wrong | Fixes 2 and 4 |
| Sputters after a refill | Cold fuel or overfilled | Fixes 3 and 7 |
| Weak or uneven flame | Dirty jet or low-grade butane | Fix 5 |
| No spark at all | Worn igniter | Fix 6 |
| Works indoors, fails outside | Cold weather | Fix 8 |
1. Check the fuel
Look at the fuel window if your torch has one. If it’s empty, refill it. Our Butane 101 guide walks through a clean refill.
2. Purge trapped air
Air trapped in the tank blocks fuel. Point the fill valve away from you and press it with a small screwdriver or pen tip until the hissing stops, then refill. Do this outdoors or near an open window, nowhere near a flame.
3. Let the fuel settle
Freshly filled butane is cold and needs to warm back up. Wait about five minutes after refilling before you try to light it.
4. Reset the flame adjuster
Turn the adjuster all the way down, then raise it slowly while you try to light. Too low and nothing comes out; too high and the gas rushes past the spark and won’t catch.
5. Clean the jet
Low-grade butane leaves residue that clogs the nozzle and weakens the flame. A short blast of compressed air across the jet often clears it. From then on, use 5x or higher refined butane.
6. Check the spark
Click the igniter in a dark room. If you see a spark but no flame, the problem is fuel (go back to fixes 1–4). If there’s no spark at all, the igniter is likely worn or misaligned, and replacing the torch is usually cheaper than repairing it.
7. Don’t overfill
Stop filling as soon as fuel sprays back out of the valve. An overfilled tank pushes liquid fuel into the jet, which makes the flame sputter. Let it sit for a few minutes, or burn it briefly to settle.
8. Warm it up
Butane struggles to turn into gas near freezing temperatures. On a cold night, keep the torch in an inside pocket for a few minutes before using it.
When to replace it
Cracked housings, leaking valves and dead igniters are worth replacing rather than fixing. We carry single- to quad-jet torch lighters and refined butane in Santa Ana, open every day until 2 AM.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my torch hiss but not light?
Fuel is flowing but not catching: purge trapped air, then reset the flame adjuster low and raise it slowly while lighting.
How long should I wait after refilling a torch?
About five minutes, so the cold fuel can warm back up.
What butane should I use?
5x or higher refined butane. Lower grades leave residue that clogs the jet.
