Butane 101:
Refilling and Caring for Your Torch

Butane grades, the purge-and-fill routine and fixes for a torch that won’t light.

By the X Rated crewUpdated November 20263 min read

Key takeaways

  • Use 5x or higher refined butane in torches.
  • Purge the tank before refilling to let trapped air out.
  • Wait about five minutes after filling before you light it.

Most torches that “stop working” aren’t broken. They’re clogged, full of air, or filled with cheap fuel. Here’s how to keep yours firing.

Butane grades

The number before the “x” is how many times the butane was refined. Cheap 3x butane leaves residue that clogs the tiny jets in a torch. Use 5x or higher for torches, and 7x or 9x for premium torches and cigar lighters.

The refill routine

  1. Turn the flame adjuster down to minimum.
  2. Purge the tank by pressing the fill valve with a small screwdriver until the hissing stops. This lets out trapped air.
  3. Fill upside down. Turn the torch over and press the butane can straight down in short bursts.
  4. Wait five minutes so the fuel warms to room temperature before you light it.

Won’t light?

  • Sputters: air in the tank. Purge and refill.
  • Weak flame: turn the adjuster up, or the jet may be clogged with residue from low-grade fuel.
  • Clicks but no flame: the fuel may be too cold, or the igniter is misaligned. Wait, then try again.
  • Leaks while filling: the nozzle tip doesn’t fit. Try a different adapter tip.

Care and safety

Store butane and torches away from heat and direct sun, never refill near an open flame, and let a hot torch cool before putting it away. Need fuel or a new torch? It’s all in the lighters and torches department.

Choosing a torch

TypeFlameBest for
Single jetPrecise, fuel-efficientEveryday lighting
Double jetWider flameCigars and faster lighting
Triple jetWide, wind-resistantBig cigars, outdoors
TabletopLarge tank, steady flameQuartz and long sessions

Look for a fuel window, an adjustable flame and a safety lock.

Storage and travel

Store torches and butane cans in a cool place, out of direct sun and away from heat sources. Don’t leave them in a hot car. Rules for flying with lighters and butane vary, so check before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my torch light after refilling?

Trapped air or cold fuel. Purge, refill and wait five minutes.

Does butane quality matter?

Yes. Low-grade butane leaves residue that clogs the jets.

How do I know my torch is empty?

The flame weakens and sputters. Most torches have a fuel window.
