Hookah 101:
Setup, Heat Management and Coals

A great hookah session comes down to three things: water, packing and heat. Get those right and a single bowl lasts close to an hour.

Water level

Fill the base with cold water until the downstem sits about an inch below the surface. Too little water and the smoke is harsh; too much and it's hard to pull. Ice in the base cools things further.

Packing the bowl

Fluff the shisha and sprinkle it loosely into the bowl until it's just below the rim. Don't press it down; air needs to move through it. Leave a small gap so the heat source doesn't touch the tobacco.

Foil vs. heat management

Foil is cheap and works: stretch it tight and poke small, even holes. A heat management device sits on top of the bowl and holds the coals, giving steadier heat and no foil to replace. If you smoke often, an HMD pays for itself.

Coals

Natural coconut coals burn cleaner and longer than quick-light coals. Heat three cubes on a burner for 8–10 minutes, until every side is ash-gray, then place them on the foil or HMD. Wait 3–5 minutes before the first pull.

Fixing a harsh session

• Too hot: move a coal to the edge or remove one.
• Thin smoke: add heat or wait for the bowl to warm up.
• Burnt taste: the bowl was packed too high or the coals sat too long in one spot. Rotate them every 10–15 minutes.

Cleaning after a session

Empty the base, rinse it with warm water, and run a brush through the stem. Soak the bowl to remove old juice. A quick rinse after every session prevents old flavors from mixing into the next one.

Hookah etiquette

• Pass the hose by laying it down or handing it with the mouthpiece pointed away.
• Use disposable mouth tips when sharing.
• Let the host manage the coals.
