Key takeaways
- A cigar locker is a personal compartment inside a shop’s walk-in humidor.
- Your cigars stay at the shop’s humidity, so there’s no humidor to maintain at home.
- Lockers suit regulars, people resting or aging boxes, and anyone without a good spot at home.
- At X Rated in Santa Ana, ask at the counter or call (657) 335-5888 for availability and pricing.
A cigar locker is a small, private compartment inside a cigar shop’s walk-in humidor, rented to one customer. Your cigars live in the same room as the shop’s stock, at the same humidity, and they’re waiting whenever you stop by.
Why rent a locker
- Right humidity without the upkeep. No seasoning cedar, refilling humidity packs or calibrating a hygrometer at home.
- Room to rest a box. Many smokers let new cigars rest for a few weeks after shipping before they smoke them. A locker is a good place to do it.
- Your stash, ready when you are. Stop by, pull a cigar from your locker and go.
Locker vs. a humidor at home
| Cigar locker | Home humidor | |
|---|---|---|
| Humidity | Kept by the shop’s walk-in | You season, refill and calibrate |
| Upfront cost | Locker rental | Humidor, humidity packs, hygrometer |
| Access | During shop hours | Anytime |
| Best for | Regulars and box buyers | Smoking at home most nights |
Who a locker is for
Lockers make the most sense if you stop by the shop often, buy cigars by the box, or don’t have a stable spot at home (hot garages and dry apartments are hard on cigars). If you smoke at home most nights, a good desktop humidor may suit you better, and plenty of people have both.
Questions to ask before you rent
- What does it cost, and for how long?
- How big is the locker? Will a full box fit?
- When can I get to it? (Usually during shop hours.)
- Can I store cigars I bought somewhere else?
- What happens at renewal time?
